Niels and Vicki first met in the carpark at The College of Law in Chester in 1993.
Niels left an in-house, head of legal position with a large environmental consultancy to set up the practice in 2007 and Vicki joined him in 2012 having been a partner and head of a private client department with a large Shropshire firm. Despite the many well-intentioned, concerned comments about husband and wife working together, they are still happily married to each other.
Laura joined the firm in 2013 having worked with Vicki previously. They have been checking each other’s drafting when a clause or situation is complex, and constructively talking through challenging professional and legal conundrums for more than 15 years without one serious argument. Catrin became part of the team in 2018, joining from a large Cardiff law firm. She brought with her some great ideas, real commitment to her chosen legal career, immense kindness, and a willingness to take on the role of ML social secretary. This requires her to get the team out together one evening a month, a role which post-pandemic, she has resumed with relish!

The fact that we are colleagues and friends helps every aspect of the firm. Over time, most of our clients get to know all of us in the office and they value this. Most important to the way we work is our shared committed professional ethos. We all care about doing a good job, we get on well and we support one another.
Over 15 years the practice has grown organically and steadily. We have acted for thousands of clients without (touch wood, and please don’t let this be tempting fate) one formal SRA complaint or negligence claim. We have achieved and maintained various additional Law Society and professional quality standards including Lexcel. We act for many professional clients including solicitors, both retired and those that are still suffering. They are tough clients to have but having them on our books means that we know we are doing something right.
We have always done things a little differently to the traditional law firm. No matter how big or glossy the firm may be it is essentially all about the people. Our consistent modern working practices have benefitted our clients and us as individual lawyers. We have always harnessed the best of technology but never abandonned the personal touch. When the first lockdown of the pandemic came, we unplugged our laptops in the office one day and carried on working from home the very next day in exactly the same way. We did miss the face-to-face client meetings, but we also enjoyed seeing clients in the relaxing surroundings of their own kitchens, plus we also got to meet lots of our clients dogs on Zoom and Teams! We are confident that ‘hybrid’ / ‘blended’ or whatever current label it’s given, is the way to go.
Whippets have also been a non-negotiable part of the ML story from the beginning, over more than a decade we have had some challenging photoshoots always involving sausages (see below). Freddie was the original whippet, and we said a sad goodbye to him in 2019, the year before Kerry retired after 8 years with us. This left Morris as our solo canine mascot. Cyril was eventually recruited in January 2022 and he is currently being trained in accordance with the Lexcel compliant office manual.
